The Delaware River is a major river on the Atlantic coast of the United States. It goes on for 14,119 square miles (36,570 km2) through five U.S. states—New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. This location is where George Washington made his famous crossing of the Delaware River on December 25th, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. Washington led troops of the Continental Army across the icy river to Trenton, New Jersey to fight against the Hessian force. Washington's army won this battle, capturing 900 Hessians. This battle became known as the Battle of Trenton.
