Information on the host

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, born on January 30th, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York, was the 32nd President of the United States from March 4th, 1933, until his death on April 12th, 1945. He was a fifth cousin of fellow President Theodore Roosevelt.

Presidency

As President, Roosevelt is known for a set of laws jointly called the “New Deal”. These policies helped stop the Great Depression, which previous President Herbert Hoover was mostly blamed for. The "New Deal" policies helped Roosevelt be re-elected in a landslide in 1936. Roosevelt was elected to a historic third term in 1940, breaking the decades-long tradition set by George Washington of stepping down after eight years.

Roosevelt's third term, overshadowed by World War II, included his famous speech where he declared war on Japan, known for describing the Pearl Harbor attack as a “date that will live in infamy”. He soon also declared war on Germany, which at the time was lead by the infamous Nazi dictatorship of Adolf Hitler. Roosevelt was one of the “big three” world leaders at the time, along with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin.

Death and legacy

The stress of being President, however, took a major toll on Roosevelt's body. Despite his declining health, Roosevelt was elected to a historic fourth term in 1944. Roosevelt died in office on April 12, 1945 from a cerebral hemorrhage; he was the longest-serving President in American history.

Soon after Roosevelt's passing, the United States Congress enacted the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, limiting a President's tenure to no more than two elected terms in office. The tradition of retiring after eight years, started by George Washington and followed by every President except for Roosevelt, was officially put in writing.

Historians generally praise Roosevelt for his leadership and policies, with his only major criticism stemming from the Japanese internment camps during World War II.
