Information on the cameo

Magikarp is a Water-type Pokémon based on a fish; therefore, its species is the Fish Pokémon. It evolves into the Water/Flying-type Pokémon Gyarados at level 20. It is commonly seen in water areas and can easily be caught with fishing rods, especially the Old Rod. It is known for being one of the weakest Pokémon in the Pokémon universe, if not the weakest of them all. This is mainly due to its poor statistics and its inability to learn any attacking moves up until level 15 - the only attack it can use prior to that level is Splash, which has no effect whatsoever.

One Magikarp was infamously sold by a Magikarp salesman to James, only to be later kicked out into the ocean after deeming it useless, where it evolved into a Gyarados and assaulted James and the group. Later, the same salesman sold a Magikarp to Jessie as well in the disguise of a Feebas, where it was shortly after released upon revelation it was actually a Magikarp.

Appearance in the rap battle

Several Magikarp appear in Ash Ketchum's second verse when he rides on a Lapras. They fly out of the water after Ketchum says the line, "Set sail and Galápago-suck on these!"

Trivia

  • Magikarp is the only Pokémon to cameo within the battle that Ash Ketchum has never owned a variant of during his career as a Pokémon Trainer. Ketchum has befriended both a Lapras and a Butterfree during the series, currently possesses a Charizard and a Pikachu, and was forced to catch a number of Exeggutor during the course of one episode.
    • Magikarp was likely included in the battle due to its infamous reputation as a humorous Pokémon, as well as being a poor choice to battle with. It may have also been included due to it being one of the most abundant aquatic Pokémon in the Pokémon world.
