Red Square is one of the two locations where Ivan the Terrible rapped in Alexander the Great vs Ivan the Terrible. It is also where Mikhail Baryshnikov, Rasputin, Vladimir Lenin, Mikhail Gorbachev, Vladimir Putin, and Joseph Stalin made their cameo appearances.
Information on the location
Red Square is often considered the central square of Moscow since Moscow's major streets, which connect to Russia's major highways, originate from the square.
The name of the square actually predates the Soviet Union. It is a translation of the word красный (pronounced krasnaya) which originally meant beautiful at the time the square was built but now is translated as red. While the modern Russian word for beautiful is красивый (pronounced as krasivaya) it is still directly derived from the word krasnaya.
Starting as a slum, the town was cleared out by Ivan III, and served as a place for public execution. It is also the site of various public ceremonies and proclamations, and occasionally, a coronation for Russia's Tsars would take place.
The buildings surrounding Red Square are all significant infrastructures, including Saint Basil's Cathedral, built under the orders of Ivan the Terrible, Lenin's Mausoleum, and the palaces and cathedrals of the Kremlin.
