Information on the location

Siberia (Russian Сибирь pronounced Sibir') is a large region encompassing 77% of Russia's entire land area. It is generally considered to start in the Ural Mountains, and end in the Pacific Ocean. It gets its name from the Sibir Khanate.

Before it was conquered by Russia, different nomadic groups inhabited Siberia. The conquest of the area by Russia is considered to have begun in 1580 when, during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, Yermak Timofeyevich and an army of 540 cossacks invaded lands that were occupied by the Voguls (who before the invasion were under the control of the Sibir Khanate). After conquering the Voguls in 1580, Russia would gradually undermine the Sibir Khanate before completely conquering it in 1598. The conquest of the Sibir Khanate would ultimately pave the way for Russia's rapid eastward expansion that would see it control all of North Asia. During the 1600s, Russia's territory would continue to expand eastward until the 1650s when Russia would reach the Pacific Ocean. Russia's conquest of Siberia was largely helped by the fact that Siberia was virtually uninhabited and many native Siberians died from diseases brought by the Russians and mistreatment by Russian settlers during their conquests. Thus, "Siberia" in the broadest sense would refer to all Russian territories east of the Ural Mountains.

The environment of Siberia is known to be harsh to human habitation. While the south can support some temperate forests, much of Siberia only has an average temperature of -5 degrees Celsius. As such, taigas dominate much of Siberia's landscape with the northernmost areas hosting tundras and polar deserts. As a result, despite Russia being the world's largest country in terms of land area, its population is much smaller than both India's and China's. Due to this, Siberia garnered a reputation in the Russian Empire and Soviet Union similar to that of the Wild West in the late 19th and early 20th century United States and has historically been where the Russian Empire and Soviet Union banished unwanted peoples such as criminals and political dissidents with more than 800,000 people having been exiled there as punishment including, but not limited to, Alexander Radishchev (a Russian author and social critic during the reign of Catherine the Great); future leader of the Soviet Union Joseph Stalin; and Sergei Korolev (the father of the Soviet Space Program). The construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, however, brought great changes to Siberia as such led to an increase in migration there. Furthermore, the discovery of extensive natural resources in the area led to the founding of new industrial towns to extract such resources (though population density still remains low to this day).

In the Tomb Raider franchise, Siberia is one of the two key settings for the game Rise of the Tomb Raider where it is the location of the mythical city of Kitezh. In the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Siberia also appears as the location of the City of Lights.
