A nondescript tomb was one of the two locations where Lara Croft rapped in Lara Croft vs Indiana Jones. It was also where Mutt Williams made his cameo appearance.

Information on the location

A tomb is a place where the remains of the deceased are stored, usually after a mourning period following the person's death. Throughout most of human history, the design of one's tomb was often indicative of the religious beliefs of the society a person was part of as well as of a person's place in the society they lived in when they were alive. The richest and most powerful members of society (such as the nobility and royalty) often were buried in the largest and most ornately decorated tombs. Many cultures in ancient times also held a belief in an afterlife, so it was commonly believed that one had to be buried in an ornately-decorated tomb alongside his/her most prized possessions (referred to as grave goods) to ensure that the he or she may continue to live out the pleasures of their earthly life after death. At the same time, some tombs like the Pyramids of Giza may serve as monuments to the person interred inside to ensure that the deceased will be remembered after death. As such, tombs offer valuable insights to archaeologists wanting to study life in the past.

However, due to many of the grave goods in tombs often being incredibly valuable objects, grave robbery was and still is a common problem faced by archaeologists trying to study ancient tombs. Ancient peoples often devised many ways to ensure the protection of the valuables buried in tombs. However, contrary to popular belief, protective measures taken to prevent grave robbery in Ancient Egypt did not involve elaborate puzzles and booby traps. While booby-trapped tombs may have existed in Ancient China (according to the Chinese historian Sima Qian, an elaborate system of automatic crossbows to fire arrows at intruders was constructed to protect the tomb of The First Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huangdi), in Ancient Egypt, protective measures to deter grave robbers were much more mundane involving just barriers and debris to block the passages to the burial chambers, false rooms to fool grave robbers, curses to warn grave robbers of the consequences of their actions, and fear of being punished by the authorities (with mutilation and capital punishment being the most common punishments for grave robbery in Ancient Egypt).

Trivia

  • The design of the tomb is most likely based on the Bayon and Phnom Bakheng temples in Angkor Archaeological Park in Cambodia (the ruins at Angkor being a common setting in the Tomb Raider franchise). However, the setting being referred to as a "tomb" is still partially true since archaeologists believe that some of the temples of Angkor also served as tombs to the kings who built them.
