Information on the host
Viracocha Inca, also called Wiracocha, was the eighth ruler of the Inca Kingdom of Cusco, reigning in the late 14th to early 15th century. Originally named Hatun Tupaq Inca, he took the title "Viracocha" after claiming visions of the god Viracocha, boosting his authority. He was the son of Yáhuar Huácac and Mama Chikya, succeeding his father after a turbulent period.
His reign faced a major threat from the Chanka confederation. Legends say Viracocha fled Cusco with his heir, Inca Urcon, during the Chanka attack, leaving his younger son, Cusi Yupanqui (later Pachacuti), to defend it. Cusi Yupanqui’s victory led to his rise, overshadowing Viracocha, who either abdicated or was deposed.
Still, Viracocha began the Inca’s imperial expansion by strengthening Cusco’s military and allying with groups like the Quechua. He launched campaigns to control nearby areas, laying the foundation for the future empire. His rule also saw early architectural projects, like temples and irrigation systems.
Married to Mama Runtu, he had several children, including Inca Urcon and Cusi Yupanqui. After losing power, he lived quietly, possibly in the Sacred Valley, and died around 1438. Though often outshined by Pachacuti, Viracocha is remembered as a key figure in transitioning the Inca from a small kingdom to a growing power, with his divine name symbolizing his legacy.
